The title sets the tone: an adaptation of the great opera arias for cello (and piano!). We have been working on this project for several years now, and it is with great pleasure that we share with you the outcome of this adventure!
No genre is as rich as opera; it is opulent by the vastness of its repertoire, historical by the vision it gives of societies over the centuries, and touching by its melodies that depict the rainbow of human emotions. We offer personal adaptations of the greatest arias of all time, from Bellini to Gershwin, through Mozart, Wagner and Donizetti. For your enjoyment, we have also included Beethoven’s famous variations on Mozart’s Magic Flute. The cello is often considered the closest instrument to the human voice. Therefore it is perfect for carrying the divine prayer to the moon in Casta Diva, or for expressing Gremin’s poignant declaration in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin. The orchestral colours of the piano are an exquisite complement to the timbre of the cello and the combination of these two instruments is the ideal vehicle for presenting operatic scenes in an intimate setting.
With this project, we aim to interest aficionados of the opera world as well as neophytes, eager for romantic melodies and virtuosity. With these adaptations, Duo Cavatine expands the repertoire of the cello-piano formation and sheds new light on melodies and arias cherished by the public for centuries.
We acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts.

Recorded in 2019, this CD adventure definitely took longer than expected, and was finally released in April 2023! It involved a degree of uncertainty as to the exact date of the release, given the war in Ukraine, COVID-19 and the shortage of human resources, but we got there! The album is released under the KNS Classical label in Europe!
We had the pleasure of recording it at CBC’s Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto. Our producer and sound engineers are David Jaeger and Dennis Patterson respectively. The concept and the repertoire of the CD are based on the idea of shadow and light. Here are the works:
- Sonata for Cello and Piano FP 143 by Francis Poulenc
- Constable’s Clouds by Canadian composer David Jaeger
- Sonata No. 1 for Cello and Piano by Alfred Schnittke
